International Institute for Higher Education Research & Capacity Building (IIHEd) at O.P. Jindal Global University offers both Full Time and Part Time PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) Programme. The PhD in Higher Education program draws upon a rich, interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical research base to illuminate thought and practice within the globalizing higher education sector in India and around the world. Higher education sector provides training for a whole range of professions, including teachers in schools and colleges. What kind of educational training is required for the budding professionals in the 21st Century? Students will gain holistic and critical historic perspectives on college and university policies and practices within India. They will also learn how this landscape is changing in the 21st century within India and elsewhere in the world. More specifically, students will examine educational research questions that will directly impact teaching and learning within higher educational institutions and inform policies, as well as practice within higher education institutions.

The full-time PhD is a fully residential programme on O.P. Jindal Global University campus. The scholar is required to be located on campus and undertake her course and research work under the direct supervision of IIHEd faculty. Two outstanding full-time doctoral candidates will be paid a monthly stipend of Rs 35,000/- with on-campus accommodation and food facility for the first three years of the programme. The stipend will be revised to Rs. 40,000/- per month after successful completion of the PhD course work. The doctoral fellowship also includes health insurance benefits and conference travel funds.
The candidate is required to attend lectures and seminars, present papers in conferences, publish in leading journals, and also provide academic inputs to JGU undergraduate and postgraduate students as Teaching Assistant. The program allows you, subject to academic approval, to design a course relevant to your specific area of interests.
Classes for part-time PhD program students will be held online. There will be extensive use of technology to interact with these scholars. The part-time students will undergo the same course structure like a full-time student as per UGC requirements, though spread over one extra semester (see details below). The scholar has to take 18 credits worth core course (spread over 18 months for full-time and 24-months for part-time candidates) followed by a comprehensive examination and viva. After successful completion of comprehensive examination and viva, the scholar will need to develop and defend their research proposal. After successfully defending the thesis proposal, the scholar will conduct research and write their thesis under the supervision of IIHEd/JGU faculty members. This will be followed by a thesis defense. The scholar is required to submit a thesis of 75000-100,000 words for completion of the degree programme requirement.
Areas of Research
The PhD program consists of two phases. The first phase of the program involves compulsory research methods courses and doctoral programme specific core and elective course work, followed by a Viva and comprehensive examination. The second phase requires the PhD scholars to design and defend a research proposal, undertake fieldwork, further research and writing, and finally defend the completed thesis. The thesis is expected to make significant theoretical/empirical contribution in the field of Higher Education.
The coursework will provide basic knowledge and skills that the PhD scholars must be familiar with while conducting research on emerging issues of Higher Education in the globalizing context. These will include the use of latest methodologies and other research tools. The coursework and the research work is interspersed with semester breaks (two for full-time, and four for part-time) during which the scholars are expected to work on their areas of interest. The scholars are encouraged to do a research paper/project with an area faculty during the summer and winter semester breaks.
Along with the core doctoral courses (common to all PhD students across the university), the scholars at IIHEd are required to take three area specific doctoral courses. These courses will provide the required subject knowledge in the area of specialization and also provide exposure to contemporary issues worth investigating.
The scholars are required to undertake two seminar courses (1.5 credit each) in consultation with an area faculty in the field of research interest. The scholar needs to identify a topic of interest which may potentially lead to a thesis problem. The outcome of this course should be a research paper/working paper of IIHEd, and can be taken for publication in an appropriate journal. The scholar and guide will be co-authors of the paper for the journal.

Candidates have the choice of attending electives offered by different schools (if the topic is connected to their thesis research). Candidates must complete 20 credits as part of their coursework.
The final stage of the PhD program is the thesis defense. This is to judge the scholarly contribution of the thesis to the knowledge pertinent to the understanding and/or resolution of problems in the field of higher education. The scholar should demonstrate professional competence in either contributing empirically to the existing body of knowledge in a particular area of higher education research, or the scholar should break new grounds and bring new theoretical knowledge into the field of research.
